2025 Halloween Horror: Student Flash Fiction Contest
This autumn, the Dark Veil Society invites students in grades 9–12 to test their storytelling skills in the DVS 2025 Halloween Horror: Student Flash Fiction Contest—an international writing competition celebrating creativity, atmosphere, and the art of suspense.
Craft an original horror story—whether eerie, psychological, or paranormal—that emphasizes imagination, tone, and storytelling craft. This year’s theme is “Halloween Fright”, inviting tales that capture the spirit, suspense, and chills of Beggar’s night and the Halloween season.
Submissions Open: September 15th, 2025
Deadline: October 15th, 2025
Who can enter: Any student in grades 9–12*
* international students must be 14-18 years old and enrolled in a secondary school
* if teachers wish to submit for their class, please email us for instructions
Note: Entry slots are limited. Be sure to submit your story early to guarantee consideration.
Prizes:
- Barnes & Noble gift cards for top entries (1st - $150, 2nd - $75, 3rd - $25)*

- Winning entries published in a special Halloween showcase on October 31

Rules:
- Theme: Halloween Fright
- 500 to 1,500 words
- PG-13 (No gore, profanity, or explicit content)
- Original work only: AI-generated content is not permitted.
- One entry per student
- English language only
- Submissions must use the Classic Shunn format as a .docx or .pdf (example here)
- All entries must be received before the deadline
- Judging Criteria: Entries will be judged on creativity, adherence to theme, clarity, tone, and originality.
- Parental Permission: Entrants under 18 must have parental or guardian consent to enter.
- Authors retain full rights. Winning entries will be featured on the DVS website and social media, with credit.
